The object of these studies was the examination of the modernization potential of the Region’s Transportation Network and the expected impact on the economy and society. The study was integrated into a project plan with economical-technical cost evaluation, funding prospects and a 10 year construction plan corresponding to its respective funding. A study-management-administration action plan was developed at the same time as a necessity for the development of the Region. Also, the Regional impact caused by the implementation was estimated for interventions of such scale. The impact on the income, employment and competitiveness were carefully examined. The tourism potential was re-evaluated given the expected transportation network upgrade. The development of alternative forms of tourism (agro-tourism, winter-tourism, eco-tourism etc.) was examined by analysing the present and future trends of Greek and Foreign potential visitors.
